What HRV actually measures

Heart-rate variability is the variation in time between heartbeats. It reflects your autonomic nervous system state: parasympathetic (rest) vs sympathetic (stress/effort). A high HRV usually means you're recovered from a nervous-system perspective.

What HRV does NOT measure

Muscle growth. Strength gains. Fat loss. Body composition change. Metabolic adaptation. Muscle damage repair. Zero. It measures one system (nervous), not the outcome system (muscular).

The proof: you can have it both ways

Perfect HRV, losing muscle: a deload week can show green recovery while strength drops (CNS recovered, muscles still fatigued). Poor HRV, gaining muscle: a heavy block can show red recovery while you're building (CNS taxed, muscles adapting perfectly).

Why wearables stop short

They measure the input (did you recover?) perfectly. They measure zero output (is your body changing?). HRV is a signal, not proof. Proof is composition.
